Not Just Pets Supports Rajapack and Tiggywinkles charity Hedgehog Mansion

Here at Not Just Pets we are excited to support Rajapack who are raising money for Tiggywinkles charity by building a Hedgehog Mansion!

As part of our Wildlife day that we are planning (more information coming!) we will be raising money to donate to the Tiggywinkles animal charity and help Rajapack reach their £1000 target and build a cardboard masterpiece.

Rajapack and animal charity Tiggywinkles, are building the mansion to raise the money needed to provide care to sick and vulnerable hedgehogs this winter—the season of hedgehog hibernation.

Not Just Pets stocks a wide range of accessories and food made especially for hedgehogs. You can find out more about them in store.

Hector (pictured below) — Rajapack’s nominated house hedgehog—will be given a sky dish, swimming pool and private jet, but only if donors reach the charity target of £1000. For each £50 target that is met along the way,

Rajapack will add a new feature to Hector’s mansion. Public donors can see Hector’s house progress and donate on the Rajapack website.

The house is to-scale and is suitable for any hedgehog seeking a life of luxury. The design means that Hector has room to move around freely and to invite his hedgehog friends, should they care for a game of tennis or a chill in the pool. Built from Rajapack’s finest cardboard, the mansion can withstand very mild gusts of wind.

When we first found out that they needed packaging supplies and help with fundraising efforts, we jumped to help them. As the hospital receives no national funding, they rely heavily on the generosity of the public to provide the best in care free of charge.

Fantastic New Shopping Experience With Three New Rooms at Not Just Pets

Our Bath city centre store now has three new rooms that are all ready for customers to visit. These new rooms will enhance the customer shopping experience and offer something different and new! We have taken the customer feedback about the store and have integrated them into three new rooms in our downstairs area. We are eager for customers to come in and visit them so we can hear what they think about them.

The first of our three rooms is The Garden Room. The store layout as it was did not have enough room to display all the big hutches, cages and coops that we keep in stock for customers to view. We have decorated the room to look like a lovely sunny garden. With Grass, a tree, butterfly, birds and bees. Customers can now see the hutches built up and see the quality and size to help them choose what is right for their needs.

The second of our new rooms is The Relax and Play Room. The area is big enough to stock a vast array of bed designs and sizes that customers were asking for. Customers can now try out the beds and see which they would like to purchase. There are beds for cats and dogs of all shapes and sizes. They look very inviting and we have to check no one has fallen asleep in there! This is the relaxing part of the room.

The play part of the room has a fantastic treat dispenser that with 50 pence you can get a handful of treats to try out the interactive treat toys that we stock. There is enough space for dogs to try out the toys before you buy them. At the moment we have some great Kong toys to try out and the first 6 customers who say “Treat please” at the till will have a free go on the treat dispenser and toys!

The third new room boasts the best views from around the world! It is our very own Pet Hotel. This is a dedicated area for boarding small animals, pets and birds. Decorated to look like a hotel room complete with lamp, rug and bible. We are able to offer the customer 7 days a week pet boarding, safe in the knowledge that their pet is well looked after here in Bath.  We have prices per day and discounts for longer stays and multiple animals. Call the store today and ask for a quote. The Pet Hotel will even be open over the Christmas holidays! So if you are planning on going away we can make sure your pets are well looked after.

We are Celebrating 10 Years in Bath! Join our Party!

We are celebrating our 10 Year Anniversary on the 25th October and to mark this occasion we are planning a week-long party including open days, charity raffles, games, prizes and much more. We will also be revealing three new rooms at the Bath city centre store and the details are under wraps until just before the day!

The events commence on Sunday 19th October where we will host a Reptile day with Jason from Eurorep visiting the Bath store with some exotic animals and a reptile themed raffle. The party continues throughout the week with guests and competitions in store. The party ends on Saturday 25th October when we will hold a Huge Charity Open Day as our Grande Finale.

On Saturday 25th October the Bath store will host special guests Tony Knight International Dog Listener, Mark from Nature’s Way, new company Fisherman’s Daughter, Antler Dog Chews and others.

Customers can also test their throwing skills with Andy from Rolf C Hagen as we have also planned a Nerf Dog Challenge on Kingston Parade (by the Abbey) . They will be given the chance to score as many points as they can in one minute and a special prize will go to the player with the most points at the end of the day, plus other runners-up prizes.

There will be fancy dress, face painting, party bags, lucky dips, pet food samples, animal handling, coffee donated by Starbucks as well as delicious home made cakes which will be available for a donation to charity. All fundraising monies raised on the day will donated to the worthy local charity Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE) who will also be guests at the open day with volunteers and dogs visiting the store.

Local companies and businesses in the bath community have been very generous and the Charity Raffle has some fantastic prize donations from the Roman Baths and Assembly rooms, Society Cafe, Spirit photography, Eric Snooks, Macdonalds Bath Spa hotel and Shakeaway!

The Dangerous Dogs Act New Amendment- How It Affects You and Your Dog

The Dangerous Dogs Act (section 3) is a law that protects the public from dogs that can cause harm. That does not only apply to banned breeds but any dog that is considered a dangerous threat. In May of this year the law was amended to apply to private property as well as in public spaces. This will impact on all dog owners as they will need to protect any visitor to their home as well as delivery drivers and post men and women. If they do not manage their dog’s behaviour when there is a visitor, delivery driver or post person at their door they risk committing a criminal offence.

At Not Just Pets we care about animals and their owners and we would like to share this vital information so you are aware of how to protect yourself and your pets. The National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) have some great information about how the Dangerous Dogs Act affects all dog owners no matter what size, age or breed.

The NAWT have a website and blog with a summary of what you can do to protect you and your dog in regards to the law. Below is a list of the steps they have suggested:

Ensure your garden is safe – this will not only make sure that your dog can’t escape out of the garden and be injured, or possibly be considered a threat but also protects unexpected visitors who will not be able to enter your property without your knowledge.

Manage your dog’s behaviour at your front door – Plan ahead and have a routine when there is a visitor at your door. You need to be able to have visitors at your door without them encountering your dog. Put your dog in another room or out in the back garden if that is secure.

Manage your dog’s behaviour when there is a knock on the door – You may need to help your dog manage its behaviour and seek professional training to help your dog and you. Your dog doesn’t need to bite someone for them to be considered a threat.

Manage the way your dog greets people – You need to make sure they behave in a way that is acceptable to all visitors. You might not mind them jumping up but others may consider that aggressive behaviour.

On the 16th July 7-8pm the NAWT is offering a free Webinar to help people become aware of the act and the amendment. Register for your place and you will be able to learn more about the act.

Owning a dog is a great responsibility and as the owner you are required to train your dog and keep them safe.

Benefits of pet ownership and children – Buying for the school holidays?

The schools are nearing the end of the summer term and parents are starting to think ahead to the 6 week summer holidays. Here at Not Just Pets we believe that it is a great time to think about buying a pet! Let us look at the advantages of getting a pet at this time of the year and also give you other information to think about.

Advantages of getting a pet for children at this time of year

Plenty of time to enjoy new pet – With six week off school the children will have plenty of time to play with and bond with their new pet. Without the busy mornings and homework filled afternoons.

Holiday research project – For older children this can be a good project for your child to research and read up on the pet they wish to adopt. You will be confident that they are committed to the pet if they take their time and do a good job.

Time to bond and set up a routine – Owning a pet requires a routine of feeding, grooming, playing and health checking. This all needs to be done to make sure your pet stays healthy and happy. The holidays will give enough time to be able to work out what and when things need doing without worries of other deadlines and projects. This will ease the pressure of your pet settling in.

Outside play, exercise and physical activity – Children with pets benefit from extra outdoor play and exercise. With longer daylight hours and nicer weather children will be outdoors playing with their pet. It depends on your type of pet of course!

A great way to introduce responsibility – Owning a pet is a great way to introduce children to responsibility. Even when the parent remains the main care giver for the animal you can give children age appropriate tasks to help care for the pet. Young children can help pour out water and food at dinner time. Older children can help groom and tidy their pets environment. Teens and young adults may be mature enough to be the main carer for some pets such as reptiles and small animals.

Owning animals also offers an experience of life and death. We don’t like to think about it but sometimes the worst happens and this can teach children about bereavement.

Pets can help with our children’s learning – Some children feel more confident tackling their homework when they have a pet to help. Reading aloud to a pet can give children confidence in their reading. I remember talking German to my pet cat when studying for my GCSE’s. He did a great job of listening!

Aids bonding among siblings – It has been suggested that siblings who take care of a pet together get along and form a strong bond. This will result in less falling out and bickering – music to any parents ears I am sure!

Also for children who do not have siblings owning a pet can help them learn about relationships, emotions and teach them about socialising.

Things to think about 

Will you be on holiday during the six week break? – Summer is the time of year most families go away on their holidays. Here at Not Just Pets we offer a pet boarding service! So why not book in your pet for a holiday as well? They will be kept in a safe environment, fed and watered everyday (our Bath store is open 7 days a week), given exercise, will be played with and given a health check to ensure they are happy and healthy. If your pet requires any additional care, just give the store a call and we will be happy to sort anything out and book your pets in.

Commitment and responsibility remains with the parents – When buying a pet for your children we always remind parents that the commitment and responsibility will always rest on their shoulders. No matter how much they begged, researched, pleaded for their pet, even the most responsible child can lose interest. When buying a pet make sure it is one that all the family will enjoy and love to take care of.

Make sure the pet is suitable for your lifestyle – Do you have the time, money, space and ability to take care of the pet? Pets need to be kept in a suitable environment and usually the bigger the better is required for their well being.  We would suggest looking into pet insurance to protect the investment of having a pet as vets bills can be costly and sometimes unexpected.

Ashley Wins Two Awards at the Bira Highstreet Conference and Gala!

 Ashley Gale, Manager of our Not Just Pets branch in Larkhall has won two awards at the British Independent Retailer Association (bira) conference and gala held on Thursday 15th May 2014 at the Cotswold Water Park. The awards were presented by Chris Barrie of Red Dwarf and Brittas Empire fame.

Ashley’s first award was for the Young Retailer of the Year in his division of Pet Product Retailer Association (PPRA).

After winning his division, Ashley was then up against four strong candidates, who had won their divisions, for the overall award. The other divisions included hardware, cookware, agriculture, gardening, pet and fashion, across the UK. The judges were unanimous in their vote and chose Ashley as winner of the British Independent Retailer Association (bira) UK Young Retailer of the Year.

Ashley was nominated for this award after all his hard work and dedication to the company. At the age of 16 in 2005 Ashley joined Not Just Pets as a Saturday worker. Enjoying his work and engaging with the business and customers, Ashley progressed and last year was offered the manager position at the Larkhall Store.

Ashley’s prizes include Champagne, certificates and two plaques as well as a place at the prestigious Oxford Summer School for Retail at Oxford University. The School offers the best training and development for retail managers.

The prize of a place at the Oxford Summer School for Retail is fantastic and, from an ex-graduate of that school I can confidently say he will thoroughly enjoy it and will learn so much. Pet emergency – Part 1 – Dogs and chocolate what is safe?

This weeks blog is part of our Pet Emergency series that will offer advice and information around what life is like living with animals and what to do when there is an emergency.

This is Part 1 which will explain why dogs can not eat chocolate and what to do if your dog eats some by accident.

What is in chocolate that is so bad for dogs?

Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine which is similar to caffeine. This is what is poisonous to dogs. Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine, white chocolate the least and dark chocolate the most.

In 25 grams of white chocolate there is minimal amount, in milk chocolate 44-64mg, in dark chocolate 390-450mg and in dry cocoa powder 800mg.

100-150mg of theobromine per Kg of bodyweight is toxic to dogs. So if a regular sized dog weighing 30kg eats 1kg of milk chocolate it is enough for a fatal toxic reaction.

How does it harm your dog?

Theobromine will affect your dog’s heart, central nervous system and its kidneys, depending on how much the dog has eaten compared to its body weight.

What are the symptoms of chocolate poisoning?

When a dog has eaten some chocolate depending on how much they have eaten and their body weight you can expect these symptoms.

  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • restlessness
  • breathing difficulties
  • muscle tension
  • increased heart rate
  • seizure

These can start from 4 hours up to 24 hours after consumption. The sooner you get to see a vet the better the outcome for your dog

What should you do if your dog eats chocolate by mistake?

Contact your vet straight away and they will be available to advise you of what to do. They will offer treatment which will be induced vomiting to avoid the chocolate being ingested. If it is too late for that then the vet may offer medication to control the dog’s heart rate and blood pressure.

Case study Lola the staffie 

Lola is a one year old staffie, her owner Siobhan adopted her from the local shelter. The family knows that Lola likes to scavenge for food and so no tasty tidbits are ever left out and about for Lola to help herself to. Siobhan has two children who have been taught not to give Lola anything extra to eat.

Last Sunday was Easter Sunday and the children had their Easter egg. Siobhan’s oldest child put her egg down on the table for a second and Lola had scoffed it! This could have happened to anyone that owns a dog; with all the extra treats and excitement going on during a family event sometimes thing can go wrong. Dogs seem to know how tasty chocolate is and will take any open opportunity to get it!

Knowing chocolate is not good for dogs Siobhan rang the vets and was able to take Lola in to be seen. They made her vomit so she didn’t ingest the chocolate as the amount she had eaten would have done some serious damage if not killed Lola. Lola was back home that evening with her family safe and sound.

If Siobhan didn’t know the dangers of chocolate she may not have called the vet straight away. Most pet owners do not call the vet until their pet is showing signs that they are ill. The symptoms of chocolate poisoning may not show up until 4-24 hours later when it may be too late for your vet to take action.

What if I like to give my dog a treat?

The information here is to let you the pet owner be aware of why certain things are not recommended for pets. If you enjoy giving your pet a tasty treat or you get those puppy dog eyes looking at you when you are eating your favourite snack, don’t be tempted to give a little taste as there are some alternatives! At Not Just Pets we stock a variety of treats that are suitable for dogs including doggie chocolate bars!

National Pet Month open day in our Frome Store

This Saturday 26th April in our Frome store we have a fabulous open day!

 

With the National Pet Month theme of ‘Celebrating our pets‘ there will be a variety of visitors and promotions on offer.

The open day is raising awareness of responsible pet ownership as well as raising funds for local animal charities. There will be animal handling, face painting, yummy cakes and a lucky dip so something fun for everyone!

Make friends with a fabulous rat as Anny will be bringing along her pets as well as some rescue rats.

Bring your own pet along for a pet portrait with Paul Smith who will be visiting with his camera ready to capture your pet’s photograph.

Cats Protection will be in store with a lovely table of goodies. Raising awareness and funds for the cat charity.

A special feathery friend will be visiting too! Boo, the European Eagle owl will be in store.

Need help with pet training and behavior? Colin from Company of Animals will be available with some fabulous products and offers.

With special offers and samples of both cat and dog food, Kelly from Canagan will be available to help answer your pet nutrition questions.   

Imogen a dog physiotherapist will also be in store offering advice.

Not Just Pets will have offers on aquatic set-ups. So you can get everything ready for your aquatic pets. As well as 20% off dog beds!

Celebrating reptiles this week at Not Just Pets!

Our exciting open days as part of National Pet Month continue this Saturday 19th April with reptiles and exotic animals taking centre stage.

If you have not made it to one of our open days yet this is the one you don’t want to misssssssss…

Andy from Swindon reptile rescue will be in store and he will have some very special guests with him including an iguana! He will be explaining why reptiles and exotic animals make excellent pets, and also explaining the reasons behind the ones that do not.

Get hands on experience with some of the reptiles during the day. You will be able to ask questions and get advice on all the things you will need to know about keeping a reptile. Staff will be on hand to discuss the different options regarding the best food, substrates and environments for your reptiles.

There will be special offers on set-ups for reptiles and staff will be on hand to ensure you have everything you need. All you need to decide is which animal you want to take home!

There will be a cake sale in store on Saturday to raise funds for the Reptile Rescue, with some rather yummy fun reptile themed cupcakes. Look out for fundraising competitions happening in store on the day.

National Pet Month continues! Celebrating cats, dogs and birds!

 

We continue our National Pet Month Celebrations this week at Not Just Pets with cats and dogs! There are many wonderful reasons to own a cat and dog, so please come and join us in store with another fabulous open day this Saturday 12th April

Kelly from Canagan will be joining us and she will be offering nutritional advice for both cats and dogs. Find out about this fantastic new food which is grain free and formulated to offer the best for your pet.

We have Imogen who is a dog physiotherapist visiting in store. She will be offering advice and information.

Also, we will have the expertise of Caroline, who is a Dog Trainer from Clever Dog Company she will be in store to answer questions about your pet’s behaviour.

Bath cats and dogs home will be in store and we will once again be supporting and raising funds for them by selling cakes and treats. Claverton will be here plus Bella and Bob.

As part of the celebrations we will have advice, freebies and more!

The location for these cat and dog festivities is in our Bath store Not Just Pets, St James Parade, Bath. Join us between 10.30am-4pm

In our Larkhall store we are Celebrating birds as pets this week! We will be holding an open day this Saturday 12th April. Come and join Catherine and Sunshine the Eclectus parrot in the celebrations!

Other special guests include Birdline UK Parrot rescue who will be bringing a macaw, African grey and a cockatoo with them!

We will have also have a lucky dip, offering handling advice, offers and freebies!
